Introduction

When we talk about real wireless headphones, we mean big audio brands or technology giants. But some manufacturers tend to attack the market by cutting prices. This is the case with Lidl headphones: with SilverCrest tested for you.

After launching a true, in-ear wireless headset, SilverCrest, Lidl’s supplier, this time decided to fight its Airpods with its second model. But is the quality of the headphones worth the fuss it caused for € 25? This is what we will see in this full test. If these headphones do not have an official name, they are referred to as STSK 2 C3. Therefore, we classify them under this sweet name in this test.

Design inspired by AirPods

First of all, there is no question here to compare Lidl headphones with AirPods. The headphones, developed by SilverCrest, are available for € 25. This is nine times lower than the Apple models with a wireless charging box, which is offered for € 229. While it’s clear that the headphones were heavily inspired by AirPods in their designs, Silvercrest isn’t the only manufacturer to be inspired by Cupertino. This is also the case with the Xiaomi Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 Basic, at € 40, to name just one example at an affordable price.

Still, it’s clear that the inspiration for AirPods didn’t just stop with headphones. The STSK 2 C3 case is also very reminiscent of the AirPods charging case with its gravel-shaped format. Also note that the case offers a fairly simple opening with just your thumb, even if the headphones are not easy to remove. Unlike AirPods, there’s no question of a glossy white here: SilverCrest opted for matte black. Only the casing of the case offers metal plates, even if it is really plastic. We particularly regret the willingness of the case to record fingerprints despite its matte appearance. It will get dirty very soon.

Speaking of finishing, the shoes are in need here. We are far from the quality of most high-end headphones on these STSK 2 C3s. Traces of plastic moldings are indeed present with rather ugly connections. In this case, this wristband does not inspire confidence and seems too weak in the long run. Also note that SilverCrest seems to be a fan of buttons. We find a button on the case that allows the three LEDs on the battery to light up, and a button on each headset.

Finally, in terms of ease of use, the headphones sold by Lidl are the best for fishing. As we have seen, these are open-fit headphones, meaning they offer only low passive isolation. Most importantly, headphones can be very uncomfortable in the ear. After an hour of use, the left earphone felt good in my ear, and after two hours I had to remove both to relieve my stomach a bit.

Especially simple controls

Unlike most wireless headphones on the market, SilverCrest and Lidl do not offer an additional smartphone app for pairing and using headphones. To pair, therefore, you will necessarily perform a manual procedure by pressing the buttons on both headphones at the same time.

The same goes for non-customizable controllers. There is nothing here but the basic one, you can pause the music with a single press of a button, recall the last dialed connection with two presses, and go to the next track with two presses. Similar controls on the left and right earphones. Suffice it to say that with such summary interactions, you take control of the controls offered by the headphones very quickly. Also note that you can only listen to music with one earphone if you want one ear to be free and the other earphone in the charger case.

During use, I only regretted the loss of the Bluetooth signal. It was only when my smartphone was in my pocket, with my hands over it, that the headphones were temporarily disconnected. Unsurprisingly, the STSK 2 C3 headset is not compatible with multipoint Bluetooth, so it can only be connected to one device at a time. Oddly enough, Lidl headphones tend to flash chaotically with a small LED built into the top of the control button, without anyone really knowing why. Suffice it to say that he does not go unnoticed in the dark.

Poor sound quality

When it comes to sound quality, SilverCrest headphones don’t work wonders. I have to say that we didn’t expect miracles for 25 euros … and we’re not surprised. The sound offered by the headphones is fully compressed with very low dynamics and bass for the missing subscribers. We are entitled to a dry and perfectly quiet sound. Sure, the headphones will be enough to listen to podcasts – and more – but don’t expect them to enjoy your favorite songs with every detail you know about it.

For Bluetooth connectivity, the headset takes advantage of the classic SBC codec, which is natively integrated into the Bluetooth protocol. So don’t expect more sophisticated codecs that allow better audio quality than aptX or LDAC, they’re simply not compatible.

As for voice calls, STSK 2 C3 is struggling again. The voice recording is particularly poor and the crackling is particularly annoying to the other party. “Very uncomfortable, barely audible, I have a hard time understanding what you are telling meA colleague I called for a test told me that I was in a room without background noise.

Much better autonomy than advertised

If the sound quality of the Lidl headphones is medium, the battery life will be different. On this page, SilverCrest announces a 40 mAh battery per earphone, three hours of autonomy for headphones only and 15 hours of autonomy for the charging case. So much to betray that we are far from the bill. Lidl headphones don’t offer 3 hours of battery life, but seven to eight hours, even at very high volumes, is around 80%.

For charging, a short USB-USB-C cable is included with the headphones to charge the case, but this is not the only way. Oddly enough, if SilverCrest didn’t consider it appropriate to spend a fortune on sound quality, the manufacturer decided to integrate fast charging into the headphones. A feature that is usually only found on high-end headphones.

Price and availability of Lidl headphones

The SilverCrest STSK 2 C3 headphones are available exclusively from Lidl for € 24.99. They are available in two colors: black or bronze.

In contrast, there are quite a few headphones at such aggressive prices. However, we can mention the Xiaomi Mi True wireless headset 2 Basic for 40 euros or the Realme Buds Qt for 30 euros.
