2015 User Guide Detroit Diesel Calibration Tool

DDDL is the diagnostic application which includes support for Detroit legacy engines EPA 98 - EPA 04 (DDEC III - DDEC V and MBE PLD/MR2 and VCU).

  • DDDL requires DiagnosticLink Standard or Professional to be registered prior to accessing the application.
  • DDDL is available to download from the ordering system under My Accounts > My Downloads (login required).
  • Administrative rights are required (for installation only).

To establish a connection to engine controller, DDDL must be configured:

  1. Install a device driver (e.g. Nexiq USB-Link).
  2. Open DDDL. If not connected to a unit, the application may display an error 'The specified device ID is invalid' or similar message. Click Ok.
  3. Click Close on the Welcome Page.
  4. Click Tools, Options, and Interface.
  5. From the dropdown, select the device driver installed from step 1 (e.g. USB-Link if using a Nexiq USB-Link).
  6. Click Ok.
To connect to vehicle or ECU on the bench, connect to interface device to computer USB port and to the vehicle 9-pin and turn ignition on.

If DDDL (Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link) 6.50 fails to connect, please check the following:

  1. Verify that the ECM is supported by DDDL (e.g. must be an EPA 98-04 Detroit DDEC III, IV, V or an EPA 98-04 MBE 900/4000 PLD/VCU/MR2).
  2. Verify that the correct VCI (vehicle communicaiton interface) is selected. To check, from Windows start menu click Detroit Diesel > Diagnostic Link.
  3. Close the Welcome /Caution Menu.
  4. Click Tools > Options > Interface.
  5. Click the 'Local Communicaiton Interface' dropdown and select the appropriate device. (Note: the device driver must be installed prior to configuring the device in this step. For more information or support, please review the hardware manufacturer's user guide, or visit the website, or contact support.
  6. Select the appropriate device driver (e.g. if using the Nexiq USB-Link2, select USB-Link 2) and click OK.
  7. Click OK to accept the changes.
  8. Close DDDL
  9. Turn on the unit's ignition
  10. Connect the VCI USB cable to the laptop/desktop's USB port
  11. Connect the VCI 9-Pin adapter cable to the vehicle's 9-pin diagnostic connector
  12. Open DDDL and verify communication.

If DDDL 6.50 freeze or hangs during install, try upgrading to DDDL 6.51. A known issue has been resolved where an obsolete task 'CheckWinCVer.exe' could affect the install. Ending the task via Windows Task Manager is an effective work-around.

If running Windows 8, 8.1, or 10:

  1. Go to Task Manager by holding Control + Alt + Del keys on the keyboard or search for Task Manager and hit enter.
  2. Click the View tab from the Task Manager tool bar.
  3. For Group by type, select Expand all.
  4. For the Status vaules, select Show suspended status.
  5. Select CheckWinVersion.exe and click End Task.
  6. Complete the DDDL installation.

The errors: 'Failed to launch help', 'Feature not inlcuded', or 'Help not supported' refers to the legacy help file format .HLP that is no longer supported by Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and Windows 10.

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:Program Files (x86)Detroit DieselDiagnostic.
  2. Double-click DDDL.chm. (If you cannot locate the file, search local disk C: for DDDL.CHM). If the file cannot be located, download a copy from the Downloads section and save to desktop).
  3. Double-click DDDL.chm to verify it opens.
  4. Create a shortcut to the .CHM help file. Right-click the Windows Desktop and select New > Shortcut.
  5. Enter C:Program Files (x86)Detroit DieselDiagnostic.
  6. Type a name for the shortcut (e.g. DDDL Help Menu) and click Finish.
  7. Use this shortcut to access the DDDL Help menu when needed.
